Guk Jeop Do – Border Drawing of Hong Nak Jae - 洪樂齊筆菊蝶圖 Size: 390x612mm (image excluding frame)

  • It was painted by a female artist known as Hong Nak-Jae, and her eldest brother, Hong NakSeong, wrote the epilogue. Their second brother, Hong Nak-Myeong, made the subject of the painting, and Hone Nak-Sam, their third brother, further calligraphed about its subject.
  • The paintings and calligraphy works completed by the four siblings of noble families are rare; hence, it has a great cultural significance since they were the influential GyeongHwa (京華世族) – the Pungsan Hong clan - in the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Using the chrysanthemum as the identity, a symbol of classical scholars, the painting shows the ethical predominance of the siblings, who also have the spirit of righteousness.
  • Extract: Inje University Medical Library, produced by the Hong clan siblings in Pungsan
